IPsec VPN | A VPN (Virtual Private Network) provides the means for securely communicating amongst remote computers on a public WAN such as the Internet. It can link to LANS – site to site – or a remote dial up and a LAN, where the traffic flows between these two points, while passing through shared resources like routers, switches and different network equipment. To secure the VPN communication while passing through a WAN, the participants create an IP Security tunnel, called IPsec. The IPsec solution is a suite of protocols that cryptographically secure communication at the IP Layer and it provides methods for the manual and automatic negotiations of different security associations and key distributions. The IPsec will generate the IPsec DOI, a document containing all definition for the security parameters required for the VPN tunnel. Next Generation Firewall | The term “Next Generation Firewall” (NGFW for short) is being used to describe devices that go beyond the traditional firewall functions by adding security capabilities such as intrusion prevention. The concept and the market segment is fairly new, using it to identify devices that have the following capabilities:

• Standard firewall features such as packet filtering, network address translation and VPN capabilities.
• “Integrated” network intrusion prevention.
• An “application awareness”, capable of identifying applications and applying controls at the application layer (such as allowing Skype calls but blocking it from performing file transfers).
• The ability to obtain and use “extra firewall” intelligence to improve blocking decisions, such as the use of reputation services or identity services such as Active Directory.
